Sam Gravell
Teacher. Trainer. Materials Designer. Course Creator.

I’m Sam, a business English trainer and training consultant based in Germany. I’ve got a Masters degree in Education, a CELTA certificate, and a Certificate in International Business English Teaching. Most importantly, I’ve put in my 10,000+ hours developing my craft internationally.
For over a decade, I’ve been working with professionals in a variety of contexts to help them improve their English and enjoy the process. This means always starting with a thorough needs analysis and developing tailored materials, courses, and plans. No one-size-fits-all solutions here.
I also help teachers develop their craft with workshops and engaging talks on teaching, learning, and the judicious use of AI and other technology, in and out of the classroom.

Exploring Task-Based Language Teaching: A Reflective and Engaging Approach towards Second Language Acquisition
In this succinct yet comprehensive introduction to Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), we’ll explore a methodology anchored in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research and marked by learner engagement. We’ll discuss the various TBLT forms and their adaptability across teaching contexts, highlighting the approach’s potential to empower teachers and enhance learner-centred experiences. From Task-Supported Language Teaching, as a light-touch TBLT application within existing syllabi, to a full-scale TBLT, we’ll navigate the possibilities this spectrum provides for educators and institutions, paving the way for more dynamic and effective language-learning environments.
Materials Light Teaching: Embracing Spontaneity and Authenticity in The Classroom
Dive into the world of Dogme Language Teaching, also known as ‘Teaching Unplugged’, an engaging and spontaneous approach to language learning. This concise webinar will explore how and why this approach shifts away from traditional, resource-heavy teaching towards a conversational, learner-driven methodology. We’ll discuss how this approach, grounded in real-life conversations and situations, creates an engaging learning environment. We’ll also explore how this stripped-back, reactive style can foster teacher adaptability, enhance learner engagement, and ultimately lead to more authentic, practical language proficiency.
Bespoke workshops and presentations tailored to your unique PD needs
I’ll design a tailored event just for your purposes, including relevant elements from any of the presentations above; such as the use of AI and tech tools for course design, creating materials and promoting autonomous learning; the possibilities of tasks in the curriculum and classroom; implementing materials-light, learner-centered teaching; and teaching online.

“Sam’s workshop style was participant-centric and task-based. He engaged participants actively, sparking their interest and transforming it into an interactive experience rather than a one-sided presentation. The sequencing of the workshop content, ensuring a seamless flow, was particularly impressive. Sam skillfully gave ample opportunities for the attendees to exercise their critical thinking, resulting in their active engagement throughout the workshop; it would be appropriate to say that his style had a touch of patience and poise, especially noticeable when he was listening to their answers. He enabled learning and provided ample room for interpretations and contribution through the setup of smart and engaging tasks, which were relatable to the teaching contexts of specific individuals. His feedback was helpful in enhancing the participants’ learning experience. Teachers were encouraged to ask questions and share opinions, and Sam’s attentive listening created a real- time experience. He consistently provided input for better clarity in content and context. Overall, it was a great learning experience for all involved, both those attending the event in person and online. ELTAS wishes Sam the best for his future endeavors and hopes to learn more about such online tools.”

ELTAS Blog Revolutionizing language Teaching: ChatGPT Workshop Impresses!
Expectations exceeded.
I recently had the opportunity to participate in a webinar titled ‘Creating Courses for Your Business with ChatGPT,’ presented by Sam. Given the abundance of content on ChatGPT since its launch, I signed up with modest expectations, only to be completely blown away by the session’s depth and delivery.
Sam’s presentation skillfully demonstrated his extensive knowledge of English language teaching through the sophisticated prompts and plug-ins that he utilized with ChatGPT. His expertise in Dogme and TBLT approaches, which align with my teaching style, was the icing on the cake.
His deft navigation of ChatGPT showcased not just an in-depth grasp of language education but also a visionary use of AI within the field.
Sam demonstrates an impressive eagerness to share his knowledge with others and is conscientious about giving credit where credit is due.
